How to Play a Full Game of Hong Kong Mahjong

Most Mahjong apps only let you play one hand at a time. A real Hong Kong Mahjong session is a complete match across four prevailing-wind rounds — East, South, West, and North — with at least 16 hands, rotating dealers, wind-based scoring bonuses, and a cumulative scoreboard. Here is exactly how it works and how to play one online.

What is a Full Game of Hong Kong Mahjong?

A full game — sometimes called a complete session or a four-wind match — consists of four rounds. Each round is named after its prevailing wind: East, South, West, and North, played in that order. A round ends when every player has served as dealer exactly once (assuming no dealer holds). Since four players each deal at least once, the minimum number of hands per full game is 16.

This is the structure played in Hong Kong homes, mahjong parlours, and competitive tournaments. Single-hand games are common for quick practice, but they leave out the strategic depth that prevailing winds and cumulative scoring add to a real match.

How Rounds Work: East → South → West → North

🀀
東 East Round

The first round. The starting dealer holds the East seat and the prevailing wind is East. Pung or kong of East tiles scores 1 extra faan for all players throughout this round.

🀀
南 South Round

Once all four players have been East dealer, the prevailing wind advances to South. South tiles now carry the round-wind bonus.

🀀
西 West Round

The prevailing wind becomes West. Strategy deepens — players who trail on the cumulative scoreboard often shift to higher-risk, higher-reward hands.

🀀
北 North Round

The final round. North tiles carry the round-wind bonus. The match ends when the last dealer of the North round passes the deal, and cumulative scores determine the winner.

What is the Prevailing Wind and How Does It Affect Scoring?

The prevailing wind (圈風) is the wind designated for the current round. It applies equally to all four players. If you win a hand that includes a pung or kong of the prevailing-wind tile, you score 1 additional faan — on top of your seat-wind bonus if your seat wind matches.

For example: in the East round, any player who pungs the East wind tile earns 1 extra faan. The player currently sitting in the East seat earns an additional 1 faan for their seat wind — so a player who is East in the East round and pungs East tiles earns 2 faan from winds alone.

This creates a distinctive strategic rhythm to a full game: in each round, the wind tiles that were previously neutral become valuable, and players adjust their hand-building strategy accordingly.

How Dealer Hold Works

The dealer (East seat) has a special rule: if they win the hand, the deal does not rotate — they remain the dealer for an additional hand. This is called a dealer hold (連莊). There is no limit to the number of consecutive holds, so a strong dealer can play many extra hands before the deal passes.

A dealer hold also means the number of hands per round is not fixed. If dealers frequently hold, a full game can run well beyond 16 hands. If the deal passes quickly every hand, the minimum of 16 is reached.

How Scores Accumulate Across the Match

After every hand, the winner receives faan-based points from the other three players. On a self-draw (自摸), all three players each pay the full amount. On a discard win, the player who discarded the winning tile pays the full amount; the other two pay nothing. These point deltas are added to each player's running cumulative score.

In our app, live cumulative standings appear between every hand during a full match, so you always know exactly where you stand in the match and how many hands remain.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many rounds are in a full game of Hong Kong Mahjong?

Four rounds: East, South, West, and North. Each round has a minimum of four hands (one per player as dealer), giving a minimum of 16 hands per complete match.

What is the prevailing wind in Mahjong?

The prevailing wind is the round's designated wind tile. Punging or konging those tiles earns all players 1 extra faan during that round. It changes each round: East → South → West → North.

What does "dealer holds" mean?

If the current dealer wins the hand, they keep the deal for another hand instead of rotating. The deal only passes when a non-dealer wins.

How do scores accumulate in a full match?

Each hand produces faan-based point exchanges between winner and losers. These deltas accumulate over all 16+ hands. The player with the highest total at the end of the North round wins the match.

Can I play a full 4-round Mahjong game online?

Yes — this is the only app where you can play a properly complete 4-round Hong Kong Mahjong match online, with real prevailing-wind bonuses, dealer hold, rotating seat winds, and live standings between hands.
