Play Mahjong on Cathay Pacific Flights

Yes — you can play real 4-player Hong Kong Mahjong on any Cathay Pacific flight, whether or not you buy Cathay’s onboard WiFi. Playing alone, three AI opponents run on your device; playing with friends, your iPhones, iPads and Android phones connect directly over Bluetooth. Install the Hong Kong Mahjong app and unlock an Airplane Mode pass before you board — those are the only steps that need internet.

Does Cathay Pacific have WiFi — and do you need it?

Cathay Pacific completed WiFi across its entire passenger fleet in August 2025, so as of 2026 every Cathay aircraft offers onboard internet. It is complimentary in First and Business and for Cathay Diamond and Gold members; in Economy most passengers buy a paid package for the flight.

Satellite WiFi is built for messaging and browsing, not real-time games: latency jumps, coverage can drop on ocean crossings, and a paid package covers one device — four friends means four packages. It is also switched off below cruising altitude, which is exactly when you are settling in.

The Hong Kong Mahjong app sidesteps all of that. Solo Airplane Mode runs entirely on your device, and Play with Friends Nearby connects devices directly over Bluetooth and peer-to-peer WiFi — the airline’s network is never involved, from pushback to parking.

Solo or with friends — both work offline

Playing alone, solo Airplane Mode seats you at a full 4-player table against three AI opponents running entirely on your device. Playing with friends, Play with Friends Nearby connects two to four devices directly over Bluetooth — and AI bots fill any empty seats. Both use the same engine as the online game: authentic Hong Kong rules with pung, kong, chow, faan scoring and all the special hands. Real Mahjong, not solitaire tile-matching.

iPhone, iPad, Mac and Android

The app runs on iPhone, iPad, Apple-silicon Macs, and Android phones and tablets (Android 12 or newer with Bluetooth). Mixed tables are fully supported — an Android host with an iPhone and an iPad in one game is fine, and any platform can host. Each player plays from their own device.

Match the game to your Cathay flight

A single hand takes roughly 8–15 minutes; a full 4-round match runs 60–90+ minutes. Typical Cathay Pacific sectors:

  • Hong Kong ↔ Taipei (~1 h 55 min) — One or two single hands
  • Hong Kong ↔ Bangkok (~2 h 50 min) — A run of single hands
  • Hong Kong ↔ Tokyo (Narita) (~4 h) — One full 4-round match
  • Hong Kong ↔ Singapore (~4 h) — One full 4-round match
  • Hong Kong ↔ Sydney (~9 h) — A full match with time to spare
  • Hong Kong ↔ London (Heathrow) (~13 h) — A full match, a rematch, and a sleep
  • Hong Kong ↔ New York (JFK) (~16 h) — As many matches as your table can take

Before you board your Cathay Pacific flight

Install the app

Everyone who wants to play installs the Hong Kong Mahjong app — App Store for iPhone, iPad and Apple-silicon Macs, Google Play for Android. Do this at home or on the free airport WiFi at HKIA.

Unlock an Airplane Mode pass

Each player buys their own pass in the app — a 24-hour Flight Pass for a single trip, or a monthly Frequent Flyer Pass. The purchase needs internet, so finish it before the cabin door closes.

Play one practice hand

Still on the ground, start one quick solo hand in Airplane Mode. It confirms your pass is active and the app is fully set up — no surprises at 35,000 feet.

On board: airplane mode + Bluetooth

Switch on airplane mode, re-enable Bluetooth (and WiFi between Apple devices), then Host Nearby or Join Nearby — or just start a solo game against the AI.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play Mahjong alone on a Cathay Pacific flight?

Yes. Solo Airplane Mode gives you a full 4-player table against three AI opponents that run entirely on your device — no internet, no airline WiFi. It uses the same engine and faan scoring as the online game.

Can I play with friends sitting near me?

Yes. Play with Friends Nearby connects two to four devices directly over Bluetooth (plus peer-to-peer WiFi between Apple devices). AI bots fill any empty seats, so two or three humans still get a full table.

Does it work on iPhone and iPad?

Yes — iPhone, iPad, and Apple-silicon Macs running the iOS app. Apple devices connect to each other with the same short-range technology AirDrop uses.

Does it work on Android?

Yes — Android 12 or newer with Bluetooth. Mixed tables work too: an Android phone, an iPhone and an iPad can share one game, and any platform can host.

Do I need to buy Cathay’s WiFi package to play?

No. Neither solo Airplane Mode nor Play with Friends Nearby uses the airline’s network at all. Cathay’s WiFi is nice for messaging — the Mahjong table doesn’t need it.

Is WiFi free on Cathay Pacific?

As of 2026: free in First and Business and for Cathay Diamond and Gold members, with paid packages for most Economy passengers. Either way, the Hong Kong Mahjong app works without it.

When do I need to buy the Mahjong pass?

Before boarding, while you still have internet — at home, or on HKIA’s free airport WiFi at the gate. Every player needs their own active Flight Pass or Frequent Flyer Pass; once unlocked, no connection is needed in the air.

Is Bluetooth allowed during the flight?

Yes. Keep your device in airplane mode with Bluetooth re-enabled — the standard configuration airlines permit for short-range accessories — and follow crew instructions during take-off and landing.

Flying Cathay Pacific soon?

Install the app and unlock an Airplane Mode pass before you board — then it’s real Hong Kong Mahjong from pushback to parking, WiFi or not.
