How faan are counted
Every pattern the hand meets adds its faan: for example Half Flush (3) plus All Pungs (3) is 6 faan. The calculator tries every way your tiles can be split into sets and keeps the highest total, the way you would at the table.
Limit hands (例牌) such as Thirteen Orphans, Great Four Winds or All Honours are scored on their own — nothing stacks on top — and pay the table maximum.
Anything above the table limit pays the limit (爆棚). Most modern Hong Kong tables cap at 10 faan; 8 and 13 are the other common choices. Most tables also need at least 3 faan to win (三番起糊).
Flowers are off by default: many tables, and most competitive play, use no flower tiles. If yours does, switch them on to score No Flowers, Seat Flowers, Full Flower Sets and Flower Hands.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate faan in Hong Kong Mahjong?
Add up every scoring pattern in the winning hand — for example Half Flush (3) + All Pungs (3) + a dragon pung (1) = 7 faan. Limit hands are scored on their own, and totals above the table limit (usually 10 faan) pay the limit.
How many faan is Small Three Dragons with a Half Flush?
Small Three Dragons (5) plus Half Flush (3) is 8 faan. The 5 already includes the two dragon pungs, so they are not added again. A concealed hand or self-draw adds 1 faan each.
How many faan is a Full Flush with All Pungs?
Full Flush (7) plus All Pungs (3) is 10 faan — the limit at most Hong Kong tables.
Does the calculator include flowers?
Yes, as an option. Switch on "Play with flowers" to score No Flowers (1), Seat Flowers (1 each), a Full Flower Set (2) and the seven- and eight-flower instant wins. They are off by default because many tables play without flowers.
Why is my hand not counted as a win?
A winning hand needs four sets (chows, pungs or kongs) plus a pair, unless it is a special hand like Thirteen Orphans. Check that every tile outside your declared sets is entered, including the winning tile.
